Japan Overview > Voltage
Voltage
The voltage used throughout Japan is 100 volts, AC. There are two kinds of frequencies in use, however: 50 Hertz in Eastern Japan (includes Tokyo, Yokohama) and 60 Hertz in Western Japan (includes Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka). Convertible electrical appliances like hair driers, travel irons and shavers will be useful. Alternately, a step-down transformer is required.
There are no round or 3-pin plugs in Japan. 2 point-flat-pin plugs are used instead. Buy a plug adapter beforehand.
