Tokyo has been the capital of Japan since 1868, when it was re-named from Edo. The City of Tokyo is not only the center of the government but also the center for economic activities, culture, educations, communications, etc. The population of Tokyo is approximately 12,290,000, or about 10% of the total Japanese population. If the immediately surrounding prefectures are included, approximately 26% of Japanese population is concentrated in Tokyo.
