Postal Services

In Japan mail is not collected from the mailboxes of private homes. Mail must be posted in public red mailboxes located on street corners. These boxes are easy to recognize and have two slots: the left one is for regular mail (red ink) and the right one is for international mail (blue ink), express mail and others. Post offices provide a variety of other services such as savings deposits, remittance services, foreign currency and travelers check services and relatively inexpensive life insurance.

You must be home to for the delivery of a package to sign for it. If you are not and have not designated anyone to accept packages for you, the delivery person will leave a post card with information about the delivery. They will leave a contact number for you where you can arrange a time for delivery.
